Jose “Pepe” Mendez is a legendary figure in the cigar world having introduced the rare Pilotico tobacco seeds to the El Cibao region of the Dominican Republic, as well having paved the way for his family’s long-lasting partnership with the makers of Montecristo cigars. Nearly forgotten and difficult to cultivate, the Pilotico seeds were reintroduced to the Navarette region of the Dominican Republic by the Mendez family. These tobaccos have been joined with other filler tobaccos from Nicaraguan, a Dominican binder and an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper leaf to create a complex and highly entertaining tribute to the man and the legend that is “Pepe” Mendez. Medium-bodied with prevalent earth, leather, nut and sweet spice notes. Each box of 20 cigars resembles a travel trunk complete with leather straps and metal accents.
